Produce Notes
We have some new and exciting things coming out of the field and greenhouses this week, including:
- Tokyo Bekana - the light green leafy bunch with tender white ribs, it's a super-mild mustard green that can double as lettuce or be cooked. You know it's tender and tasty when the slugs chew that many holes in it! Oy.
- Green Butterhead Lettuce - perhaps my favorite food on the planet? At least my favorite lettuce, hands down. Be forewarned, you will very likely encounter some fauna hiding in the folds of this flora (slugs, cutworms, etc) because the invertebrates of Valley Flora know a good lettuce when they see one. Wash carefully and you'll be golden.
- Radishes - nothing screams spring quite like a radish, available this week in pink or red
- Carrots - the first harvest from our January plantings, and a little smaller than we would have liked. They didn't size up on schedule but we had to start digging them this week because they're in the way of the cucumbers that are going into that greenhouse, er, yesterday. So enjoy the micro-carrot delicacy!
- Strawberries. Yup, pinch yourself, it's not a dream. They're super early and loving all this sunshine (even if we would love to see some rain in the forecast). We picked 24 flats yesterday on our inaugural harvest, which means they're not only in your CSA share, we're also delivering flats to Coos Head Food Co-op, the Langlois Market, the Port Orford Co-op, Golden Harvest and Wildwoods Gypsy this week. Ooolala!
