Week 10 - Name that Vegetable!

In this Week's CSA Share:

This week, we're giving you a vegetable geek challenge: all the produce in your share is listed by specific variety name, rather than general crop name. See if you can figure out what's what, hints provided...

  • Preludio: elegant, controversial, you can make pesto with the ferny tops!
  • Seascape: most likely gone before you get home from your pickup site
  • Dunja: popular August prank vegetable, ideally when allowed to size up to the dimensions of a large baby
  • Red Long of Tropea: like torpedoes but food not bombs, native to Mediterranean Italy and France
  • Mokum: sweet, crunchy, a CSA mainstay
  • Nevada: beats the summer heat when most other varieties wanna bolt
  • Prospera: fragrant, fragile, order a bulk bag and thank yourself this winter

On Rotation:

  • Merlin: red, also controversial, roast them into candy or sneak them into a chocolate cake!
  • Touchstone Gold: you wouldn't believe how expensive the seed is for these golden, earthy orbs
  • Golden Glory: see "Dunja" above, same general principle applies (fun to ring doorbell, leave on doorstep and run, or place a wheelbarrow-full in backseat of unlocked cars....)

Hopefully this week's guessing game will keep you plenty busy for awhile because there will be NO BEETBOX NEWSLETTER NEXT WEEK! Yours truly has plans to be in the backcountry with her family to savor a little summer off the farm. Our all-star crew will be taking good care of you, harvesting the food and trying to check emails daily. We might have some fun new things coming on next week (think "green beans," "corn"....). Thanks in advance for your patience if you reach out and don't hear back from someone right away - the crew will do their best!

Be good while I'm away, and as always, eat your vegetables!
